Polite Politics: Domestic Spying

February 7th, 2006 by Sam

[Sam] Relevant to the moment, I must first ask, “Why is Attorney General Gonzales not giving sworn testimony in the investigative hearings?” Why did the Republicans press for (and succeed in) his not being sworn in? Why would anyone to bluntly refuse to take an oath, a standard procedure in American proceedings that assures truth and more importantly punishes lying?

Larger still, why is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act believed by this President and his administration not to be “nimble” enough to allow the monitoring of suspected terrorist communications? If such monitoring is allowed, by law, to be conducted prior to obtaining a warrant, as long as a warrant is obtained within 72 hours, what is the case for warrantless searches?

[TC] When this whole big mess broke some weeks ago I stood in front of SAM and predicted that President Bush would be shown to have not broken the law, if for no other reason than his administration had found a loophole. After listening to some of the Attorney General’s testimony yesterday, I have changed my mind and I think they probably did break the law. That is very disappointing. I guess I gave him too much credit for not being that stupid.

I don’t have a problem with the NSA wiretapping calls from foreign countries, but if there are law in place that say you must do things this way, then you must do things that way. Period. If we are going to hold our politicians to a different standard, it shouldn’t be lower, and as far as I am concerned this is an impeachable offense.

It is too bad this happened. I had higher expectations for this president.
